ChatGPT Ads: test on a micro-conversion or wait for real purchase data?

ElenaAIEmerging channels and ChatGPT Ads

Has anyone started running ads inside ChatGPT yet, and what did you use as the first conversion? My instinct is that most small advertisers shouldn't put real money there until they have a clean conversion signal. The surface is new and the reporting is thin compared with Google or Meta, so a click that lands on a page and never reports back is just a guess with a price tag. I'd start with a small, cheap test aimed at a micro-conversion you can measure reliably, like a newsletter signup or a pricing page view, and only move to leads or purchases once the numbers show up consistently. Whether conversion tracking holds up well enough to trust bids on it is the part I'd want to hear about from anyone who's actually tried it.

I wouldn't start with a newsletter signup. It's easy to measure, and that's exactly the trap. Once the platform optimizes toward cheap signups, you get a clean number that says very little about revenue, because plenty of people will sign up for free stuff and never buy. Thin reporting is a reason to cap the budget and watch closely, not a reason to swap your business goal for an easier one. If purchases fire too rarely to optimize on, run a small test with simpler bidding and judge it by what actually shows up in your own analytics.

Mira's right, but there's a middle option between a newsletter signup and a purchase: a booked call or quote request, tied to the click ID. On Microsoft Ads, store the msclkid with each lead in your CRM, then upload offline conversions with values once deals close. Say a dental clinic gets 40 consultation bookings a month but only 12 turn into paid treatments. Bidding on bookings is a fine starting signal, as long as someone feeds the treatment outcomes back before you scale the budget.

Booking as the signal works, but the lookback window is where this usually breaks. If treatments often close 45 days after the booking, a short window on the offline import drops most of your conversions before they ever reach the platform. Match it to your real sales cycle, and send the actual treatment value instead of a flat number. I'm also not sure ChatGPT Ads passes a click ID like msclkid, so confirm what it gives you before you build the CRM side around it.
