Call tracking on a local service site: dynamic number insertion or one static number?

I keep going back and forth on DNI versus a single static number for local service businesses. DNI swaps in a tracking number per visitor, so you can tie each call to the keyword or landing page that produced it. The catch is that a site full of swapped numbers can make the number on your Business Profile and directory listings drift from the one people remember. For a plumber whose customers search the brand name and call whatever they saw on Maps, that can cost more than the attribution gains.

What makes sense to me is keeping the static number on the Business Profile and listings, and using DNI only on paid landing pages where the keyword data actually matters. Has anyone seen call volume drop after turning DNI on across the whole site?

Agreed on keeping the Business Profile number static. On the paid side, there's one trap: if you run call extensions with Google's call reporting and also swap in a DNI number on the same landing page, one click can end up with two forwarding numbers. Google counts the call on its end, your DNI vendor counts it on theirs, and the totals won't match.

Honestly, the cleaner setup is to pick one system as the source of truth for paid calls and let the other one only observe. Otherwise you'll burn a month wondering why Ads and your tracker disagree by 20 percent, when most of that gap is double tracking rather than lost calls.

Iris is right about double counting. One more thing on the Business Profile side: the number on the profile is also what Google reports as calls from the profile, so if you ever swap it, those numbers stop lining up with your history. Keep it static and you can compare Maps calls month to month without any caveats.

Agreed, Maps calls stay comparable as long as the profile number never changes. Paid has its own version of this problem, though. If you run call extensions with Google's call reporting, keep that extension number out of your DNI pool, or the same caller shows up under two different sources.
